Hockey Canada: Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Striving for Reconciliation
Honoring Indigenous Land and Heritage
Hockey Canada, as the governing body for hockey in Canada, recognizes the vital importance of respecting and honoring Indigenous Peoples and their lands. We believe that this recognition is a cornerstone for true reconciliation and fostering a positive relationship between our organization and Indigenous communities.
Working Together for Reconciliation
Canada is home to a rich and diverse Indigenous culture, with over 630 distinct First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. Hockey has a long history with Indigenous Peoples, and many Indigenous players have made significant contributions to the sport at all levels, including the NHL.
Hockey Canada is committed to working closely with Indigenous organizations and communities to create meaningful opportunities for Indigenous youth to participate in hockey. We also strive to promote Indigenous culture and celebrate the contributions of Indigenous players and coaches to the game.
Key Initiatives for Reconciliation
As part of our commitment to reconciliation, Hockey Canada has implemented several key initiatives:
- Establishing the Indigenous Sport, Culture, and Recreation Council to provide guidance and advice on Indigenous-related matters.
